Curwen's Garage was founded in 1921 by brothers George and Wilfred Curwen. Passed down through the family the garage was a Throckley fixture for decades. Brian Ledger shares his memory of Curwen's Garage:

'I have a lifelong memory of Curwen’s Garage on the main road through Throckley. From my starting school until 1982 the iconic fox terrier ‘Rover’ was attached to the roof of the petrol station. When he disappeared everyone was shocked that anyone would have the audacity to steal him. Sadly he was never found.
When I eventually owned a car Doug Curwen was my ‘go to’ mechanic. Once when my car was in for repair he even turned up at my workplace to tell me the problem and how much it was going to cost before he went ahead with the job.
I was always amused by the sign in the workshop that read ‘A cordial welcome is not an invitation to stay all day!’'
