Cllr Linda Wright remembers her Mam, Mary Isabella 'Belle' Nixon:

'Mam was instrumental in organising a Tenants Association at Throckley Northside and was Chair of the newly founded tenants Federation. Her team included Anne Whittaker and Ann Rob. She also helped them start what is now in the Community Hall at the Welfare.

Her nights out were attending the Townswomen's Guild and Throckley Women's Section of the Labour Party of which she was member. This led her to become active in local politics and in May 1982 after retiring she was elected as a Councillor in Newburn.

She was well known and liked and, as we her children knew, this became her main focus until

her death in January 2002.

In May 1996 she became the first councillor to use the title of Sherrif and Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne.'
